How to Measure Your Head: Hat Size Chart & Fit Guide

The quick answer

Wrap a soft tape measure around your head at the widest point — across the middle of your forehead about half a centimeter above your brows, over your ears, and around the back just above the nape. Keep it snug but flat: you should be able to slide one finger underneath. Read the number where the tape meets itself. That measurement, usually 54–62 cm (21¼–24⅜ inches) for adults, is your head circumference, and it maps directly to the size chart below.

If you don’t have a soft tape, a length of string works just as well. Wrap it the same way, mark where it overlaps, then lay the string flat against a ruler. It’s how milliners have taken the measurement for a hundred years.

Where to put the tape (this is where fit goes wrong)

Most fit problems come from measuring the wrong part of the head. A hat rests on your skull the same way every time, and that resting line is what you’re trying to measure:

  • Front: mid-forehead, about half a centimeter to one centimeter above the eyebrows.
  • Sides: one finger-width above the ears, not over them.
  • Back: just above the nape bump — the small ridge where your skull meets your neck.

Measure straight across, not diagonally. Don’t pull; a tight tape reads short and gives you a hat that squeezes. Don’t leave slack either; a slack tape reads long and you’ll live in a hat that spins. If you can fit a single fingertip under the tape without it lifting off your scalp, that’s the tension you want.

A trick from the fitting room

Measure twice, and if the numbers disagree, take the larger one. Hair adds width, and hair moves — but a hat won’t stretch to catch up. Better a shade loose than a shade tight, especially with embroidered caps, because a heavy front logo pulls the sweatband forward against your forehead over the course of a day.

Read the number: centimeters, inches, and fitted-cap size

Once you have your circumference you can shop three ways. Adjustable caps and beanies use a range. Fitted caps use a numeric size like 7¼. Apparel-style S/M/L/XL applies to a smaller set of headwear where the crown is pre-set.

Here’s the standard fitted-cap conversion — the same one New Era, Flexfit, and Yupoong publish for their blanks:

  • 6¾ = 53.3 cm (21″)
  • 7 = 55.9 cm (22″)
  • 7¼ = 57.8 cm (22¾″)
  • 7½ = 59.7 cm (23½″)
  • 7¾ = 61.6 cm (24¼″)
  • 8 = 63.5 cm (25″)

These sizes come from an old hatter’s convention where hat size × π approximates head circumference in inches — that’s why the increments are odd fractions. If your tape lands between two numbers, most people are more comfortable going up. A slightly larger fitted still feels dialled-in; a slightly smaller one gives you a headache by lunch.

How our sizes translate

We list four fits across our custom-cap catalogue. All of them are grouped and pictured on our size guide, but here’s the shorthand:

One-size / adjustable

54–62 cm (21¼–24⅜″). Covers most snapbacks, trucker caps, and dad hats. A plastic snap, buckle, or Velcro strap in the back closes the range. This is the safe choice when you’re ordering hats for a team where you can’t measure every head — the adjustable closure absorbs the swings.

S/M and L/XL fitted

S/M covers 55–58 cm (21⅝–22⅞″). L/XL covers 58–61 cm (22⅞–24″). Fitted caps hold their shape better with an embroidered logo, so they’re worth choosing when a customer or a team lead has an obvious size and wants the clean, structured look.

Youth

52–55 cm (20½–21⅝″). Kids’ heads grow more slowly than most parents expect — most youth are in this band from around age seven into their early teens.

Beanies

One-size stretch knit. A cuffed beanie forgives a wide range because the knit adapts to the skull. For very small heads (under 52 cm) or very large (over 63 cm), tell us before you order and we’ll check whether the specific blank you’re eyeing runs true.

A few real-world adjustments we make when a customer calls in with an in-between number:

  • You’re right at 58 cm. That’s the seam between S/M and L/XL. If you like a snug, structured feel, go S/M. If you prefer a hair of breathing room, or your hair has any real bulk, go L/XL.
  • You wear a ponytail through the back. Measure with your hair down first, then order an adjustable style — no fitted cap accommodates a ponytail port. A snapback or trucker with the plastic tab is the right pick.
  • Buying for kids. Children skate through hat sizes. If the child is close to 55 cm, order the adult S/M instead of youth — they’ll grow into it, and adjustable adult styles fit down to 54 cm anyway.
  • You have a lot of hair. Braids, locs, thick curls — measure with your hair styled the way you’ll wear the hat. Don’t add anything; the measurement over your hair is the honest number.

Why fit matters more with embroidery

An embroidered cap is not a blank cap. The front panel carries stitching — often thousands of stitches for a corporate logo — and that adds a small amount of stiffness and weight to the crown. Two consequences worth knowing before you order:

  1. A dense logo pulls the sweatband forward slightly under gravity. A cap that fits fine as a blank can feel a hair tight after decoration. Round up if you’re on the fence.
  2. Structured (fitted) crowns hold logo shape better than unstructured. If your artwork is detailed — small text, tight registration, layered thread — a structured cap keeps the stitches upright and legible. Unstructured dad-hats look wonderful with softer, larger marks.

The measurement stays the same either way; the crown style follows the artwork.

Still not sure? We’ll help

If your measurement lands in a gap between two fits, or you’re ordering for a team where the heads vary, don’t guess — send us the numbers. We can suggest a blank, tell you honestly if the specific model runs small or generous, and match the artwork to the cap. Our find-your-fit page walks you through a few short questions and points you at the right starting cap.
